Why this chance matters

Planting something is an act of hope. You put a tiny seed in the dark and trust that something good will come of it. Caring for a plant gives you a small, gentle daily routine, a reason to notice change, and the quiet satisfaction of watching your care turn into green leaves and maybe even flowers or food.

Easy plants for beginners

  • Sunny windowsill: basil, mint, and parsley are easy, smell wonderful, and end up in your cooking.
  • Low light: pothos and snake plants are famously forgiving houseplants.
  • Outdoors: marigolds, sunflowers, and cherry tomatoes reward beginners with color and harvests.
  • Free start: regrow green onions from the root ends in a glass of water, or ask a neighbor for a cutting.

Have pets? Some common plants are harmful to cats and dogs, so check before you bring one home.

Only have five minutes? Put the root ends of green onions in a glass of water on the windowsill. You'll see new growth in days.

Make it fun: Plant seeds with a child or grandchild and measure the sprouts together each week. Or start extra seedlings to give to neighbors.
