Why this chance matters

Routines are comfortable, but they can make our world smaller without our noticing. We drive the same roads and visit the same stores for years. Exploring somewhere new close to home brings back a sense of curiosity and wonder, and you may discover a favorite spot that was waiting there all along.

Ways to take this chance

  • Look for free days. Many museums, gardens, and historic sites offer free or discounted admission on certain days, or with a library pass.
  • Ask the locals. Neighbors, librarians, and your city's visitor center often know hidden gems.
  • Go on foot or by bus. Traveling a new way lets you notice things you'd miss from a car.
  • Choose what fits you. Check parking, walking distances, and accessibility ahead of time so the outing is easy and enjoyable.

Only have thirty minutes? Take a different route home today and stop somewhere that catches your eye.

Make it fun: Write the names of ten local places on slips of paper, put them in a jar, and draw one each month.

Bring a friend along, or make it a Say Yes Day. Don't drive? See Transportation Help for low-cost ways to get around.

Did you take the chance? Tell us where you went on the Wall of Chances. Your story might inspire someone else to try.
