Dr. Denis Mukwege: Healing with Courage and Compassion

What does it mean to give someone a chance? Sometimes it means providing something practical: an education, medical care, safety, a skill or simply the belief that a better future can be built.

Congolese physician Dr. Denis Mukwege is known for caring for survivors of sexual violence, particularly through Panzi Hospital in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

A Life That Opened Doors

His clinical work and advocacy have helped bring attention to survivors' urgent medical, psychological and social needs. He was awarded the 2018 Nobel Peace Prize jointly with Nadia Murad.

There is a lesson here for all of us. Lasting acts of kindness rarely happen in isolation. Volunteers, colleagues, neighbors and the people receiving help are part of the story, too. The most meaningful recognition celebrates that shared effort.

The Chance They Gave

He helped survivors access treatment and recognition while calling for accountability and dignity.

How You Can Give a Similar Chance

Support survivor-centered services; learn trauma-informed ways to help; respect survivors' privacy and choices.

A small chance to give today: Choose one action you can take where you live. An act of kindness does not have to be famous to matter.
