Dr. Hawa Abdi: A Place of Safety in Somalia

What does it mean to give someone a chance? Sometimes it means providing something practical: an education, medical care, safety, a skill or simply the belief that a better future can be built.

Dr. Hawa Abdi was a Somali physician who offered care and refuge to displaced families through years of violence and insecurity.

A Life That Opened Doors

Working with family and colleagues, she developed a place where vulnerable people could receive medical help and safety. Her courage was expressed not only in words but in continuing to serve amid danger.

There is a lesson here for all of us. Lasting acts of kindness rarely happen in isolation. Volunteers, colleagues, neighbors and the people receiving help are part of the story, too. The most meaningful recognition celebrates that shared effort.

The Chance They Gave

She gave people facing conflict a place to seek treatment and refuge.

How You Can Give a Similar Chance

Support reputable medical relief organizations; organize needed hygiene donations through a trusted group; make room for displaced families in your community.

A small chance to give today: Choose one action you can take where you live. An act of kindness does not have to be famous to matter.
