Say No Kindly
Think of one thing you've been saying yes to that's draining you: a commitment, a favor, a habit, a request. Today, take the brave chance of saying a kind, clear no. Every no to the wrong thing makes room for a yes to the right one.
How to do it
- Name one thing that's wearing you out.
- Decide what you'd rather do instead.
- Say no warmly and briefly.
- Resist the urge to over-explain.
Why this chance matters
Kind, generous people often struggle most with saying no. We don't want to let anyone down, so we stretch ourselves thinner and thinner. But your time and energy are limited. A respectful no protects them for the people and dreams that matter most, and it often earns more respect than a tired, resentful yes.
Kind ways to say no
- "Thank you for thinking of me, but I can't take that on right now."
- "I'd love to help, but my plate is full. Could I help in a smaller way?"
- "That doesn't work for me, but I hope it goes wonderfully."
- "Let me think about it and get back to you." This buys time when you're unsure.
A few tips: Keep it short. You don't owe a long explanation. Expect a moment of discomfort; it passes. And if anyone pressures you for money, personal information, or something that doesn't feel right, a firm no is always okay, no apology needed.
Only have one minute? Practice saying "No, thank you" out loud in front of the mirror. It really does get easier.
Make it fun: Use the time you just freed up for something that delights you, then notice how good that feels.
Balance this card with its opposite, the Say Yes Day card, and use your freed-up time with the Permission to Rest card.
