Make Something, Just Because

Spend 20 minutes making something with your hands, purely for the joy of it. Draw, paint, knead some clay, knit, arrange flowers, or doodle. There's no right way, and no one has to see it. Let your hands lead.

How to do it

  1. Grab whatever materials you have.
  2. Set a timer for 20 minutes.
  3. Start without a plan and see what happens.
  4. Don't judge it. Just notice how you feel.

Why this chance matters

Many of us stopped making things around the time someone told us we "weren't artistic." But creativity isn't about talent. It's about the quiet, absorbing feeling of making something that didn't exist a few minutes ago. When your hands are busy, your worries often get quieter, and sometimes you discover something about yourself along the way.

Ways to take this chance

  • Use what's around you. A pencil and the back of an envelope, crayons from the junk drawer, or leaves and stones from the yard all work.
  • Try something tactile. Working with clay, dough, yarn, or paint can feel especially calming.
  • Silence the critic. If you hear "that's not good," answer, "It doesn't need to be good. It needs to be mine."
  • Try a class. Libraries, community centers, and art associations often offer low-cost beginner classes.

Only have five minutes? Doodle while you're on the phone or waiting for the kettle.

Make it fun: Host a "messy art night" with friends or grandkids. Everyone makes something, and you display it all on the fridge.
