Why this chance matters

Making friends gets harder as we get older. School and work used to bring people together naturally, but after a move, retirement, or a loss, it's easy to find yourself with fewer people to talk to. Groups built around shared interests make connection easier, because you already have something in common before you say a word.

Ways to take this chance

  • Look in familiar places. Libraries, senior centers, community colleges, churches, and parks departments host all kinds of free or low-cost groups.
  • Arrive a little early. It's easier to chat with a few people before the room fills up.
  • Bring a friend if walking in alone feels like too much the first time.
  • Give it two tries. First meetings can feel awkward. The second one is often when it starts to feel like yours.

Only have five minutes? Look up one group meeting near you and write the date on your calendar.

Make it fun: Can't find a group you like? Start one. Post a note inviting neighbors to a monthly game night, walk, or potluck.
