Tips for asking for help

  • Reach out early, before you miss a payment if you can. Companies are usually more flexible when you call first.
  • Only offer what you can really pay. A smaller plan you can keep is better than a bigger one you'll miss.
  • Ask about programs by name: hardship programs, payment plans, budget billing, medical certificates for utilities, and low-income discounts.
  • Keep a record. Note the date, who you spoke with, and what they agreed to, and ask for any agreement in writing.
  • Get outside help too. Dial 211 for local programs that help with rent and utility bills. If you're facing eviction, contact free legal aid right away.
