Try Laughter Yoga: Laugh for No Reason and Feel Better

What if you could laugh without needing a joke? That's the idea behind Laughter Yoga, a practice started in India in 1995 by physician Dr. Madan Kataria. It has since spread to laughter clubs in many countries.

How it works

In a group, people do simple, playful laughter exercises, combined with deep breathing and lots of eye contact. It usually starts as "pretend" laughter, but because laughter is contagious, it quickly turns real. No sense of humor or yoga experience is needed, and you don't have to be flexible.

Why people love it

Laughter is linked with lower stress, a better mood, and a feeling of connection with others, and some small studies suggest laughter exercises may offer similar benefits. Above all, it's fun, and it's a great way to meet people. Many senior centers, libraries, and community groups host free or low-cost laughter clubs.

Try it at home: take a deep breath, then laugh out loud for 30 seconds, even if it feels silly. Notice how you feel afterward.

If you have a health condition, such as a recent surgery, hernia, or heart or breathing problems, check with your doctor first, since hearty laughter can be a workout.
