The Listening Ear
Offer the gift of listening. Find someone who might be going through a tough time and give them a chance to talk, free from judgment and interruption. Over coffee or a phone call, let them share. Being heard can be deeply healing.
How to do it
- Pick one person going through a tough time.
- Ask, "How are you really doing?"
- Listen more than you speak.
- Check in again in a few days.
Why this chance matters
When someone we care about is struggling, most of us rush to fix things. We offer advice, share our own stories, or look on the bright side. But often what a person needs most is simply to be heard. Listening without hurrying tells someone, "You matter, and I have time for you." It costs nothing, and it can be the kindest thing anyone does for them all week.
How to take this chance
- Pick one person. A friend who's been quiet lately, a neighbor after a loss, a coworker under strain, or a relative who lives alone.
- Open the door gently. Try: "How are you really doing? I've got time if you want to talk."
- Listen more than you speak. Put your phone away. Ask, "What's been the hardest part?" and hold off on advice unless they ask for it.
- Close with care. "Thank you for telling me. I'm here." Then check in again in a few days.
Only have five minutes? Send a text: "Thinking of you. Want to talk this week?" Sometimes the invitation alone is a gift.
Make it fun: Turn it into a walk-and-talk around the block, or show up with two coffees and an hour to spare.
